Forms you receive

Form 1099-K

Payments through apps and card processors

When it's duePlatforms send it by February 1, 2027. Payment apps and marketplaces must send it only when you get over $20,000 and more than 200 transactions (the 2025 law restored that threshold). Card processors report card payments of any amount.

What it is

Reports the gross amount processed for you. It isn't your income: refunds, fees, personal transfers and sales of personal items at a loss aren't taxable.

Who it's for

People and businesses paid through PayPal, Venmo, Stripe, Etsy, eBay and similar platforms.

Good to know

  • Selling your own used things for less than you paid isn't taxable, but you may need to show that on the return if you got a 1099-K.
  • Friends-and-family transfers shouldn't be on it; ask the platform if they are.

The law behind it

§ 6050W § 61
