Installment agreement request

What it is

Asks the IRS for a monthly payment plan. Most individuals owing $50,000 or less can apply online instead and get an answer right away.

Who it's for

Anyone who owes tax and can't pay it all at once.

Good to know

  • A plan stops most collection, and if you filed on time it halves the late-payment penalty to 0.25% a month.
  • Interest still runs, so pay off what you can.
